All Art classes at Memorial Junior School meet 3 days a week: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Grade six has class for one marking period, 9 weeks. Grades 7 and 8 classes meet for 6 weeks.
The Curriculum for Grade 6 centers around the Elements of Design. Knowledge and understanding of line, shape, color, value, texture, space, and form are imperative for all artists. Students also have fun learning more about color and design stressing mixing all colors from just the three primary colors.
Sixth grade students also work in three dimensions using clay. Handbuilding techniques are learned and explored, as well as an introduction to pottery wheel skills. All pottery work is bisque and glaze fired in the Art Room at Memorial Junior School by Mrs. LeSeur.
Seventh Grade Students learn about Tessellations, and the artist, M.C. Esher. Students learn how to create their own tessellation: either a translation, rotation, or reflection. Students use medium or media of choice. Working in three-dimensions- the students further their learning, building upon concepts and skills with handbuilding and the pottery wheel.
The Curriculum for Grade Eight deals more with Drawing and Painting. Students are introduced to various drawing techniques, stressing improving their artistic observational skills, and increasing their artistic self confidence. Canvas Painting is often also explored.
